What is Mips Technology?
The Mips safety system is designed to add protection against rotational motion (or kinematics) transmitted to the brain from angled blows to the head. Rotational motion is a combination of rotational forces from rotational energy (angular velocity) and angular acceleration, which both affect the brain and increase the risk of minor and serious brain injuries. Mips' additional protection system has been proven to reduce rotational motion when applied to a helmet by absorbing and redirecting energies and forces that would otherwise be transmitted to the brain. We know from scientific research that the brain is particularly sensitive to rotation. In the event of a collision, the purpose of the helmet technology provided by the Mips® safety system is to help reduce the impact of rotational energy on the head by providing relative movement between the head and the helmet.
When such an impact occurs, the forces created between the head and the helmet are enormous. These forces are comparable to the weight of up to 10 people suddenly standing on your helmet. Under such high pressure, friction between the head and the helmet makes it difficult for the helmet to move, even if the straps are a little loose or the helmet is not properly fitted as recommended by the manufacturer. However, the Mips® low-friction layer inside a helmet can still allow 10-15mm of multidirectional movement when this high load occurs.
Most helmets approved by industry-accepted safety standards are capable of reducing the energy of a flat, linear impact. But when it comes to angled impacts, the most common type of impact from bumps or falls, a helmet equipped with the Mips® safety system can also help reduce harmful rotational energy.
Consider falling on a slippery slope: If you fall and hit your head (or helmet), you'll likely continue in the same direction as before you fell. Alternatively, consider a similar drop on high friction asphalt, which is a very different scenario. When your helmet hits the ground, there will most likely be a sudden stop and rotation of the helmet. Mips aims to direct this energy away from the head.
