Cassettes and Rear Sprockets
This collection compares different rear sprocket arrangements. Start cassette, screw-on freewheel or single-sprocket selection with hub attachment. Assess gear count and range alongside derailleur, shifter and chain; appearance or sprocket count alone does not establish fit.

Identify the rear sprocket arrangement
Determine the hub interface. A cassette freehub and screw-on freewheel mount differ; single sprockets have their own requirements. Tooth range affects ratios and must remain within derailleur limits. Verify gear family and chain compatibility rather than matching different families by sprocket count alone. Recording the current model code provides clearer interface and family comparison than count alone.
- Read hub or freehub body standard.
- Compare smallest and largest tooth counts.
- Distinguish cassette, screw-on freewheel and single sprocket.
Can a wider gearing range fit directly?
Check derailleur capacity, chain length and system compatibility. Hub attachment must also be suitable.
Can one sprocket replace a multi-speed cassette?
That change involves the entire drivetrain. Assess hub, chainline and shifting-system requirements before treating a single part as an alternative.
