A guide to choosing bicycle cleaning products
Cleaning does more than restore appearance; removing dirt correctly also helps later maintenance. General bike cleaners, strong degreasers and powdered products may require different applications. A cleaner label does not mean identical use on every surface.
Plan subsequent drying and lubrication. Read descriptions without confusing degreasers with chain oil or other care products.
- Check manufacturer material suitability for paint, metal, plastic and other contacted surfaces.
- Distinguish ready sprays from diluted products; follow ratios and dwell times.
- Protect braking surfaces from unwanted oil and chemicals; use only products specified as brake-compatible there.
Can degreaser be used on the whole bike?
It depends on the product. Do not equate it with general surface cleaner; check applications and restrictions.
Is lubrication needed after cleaning?
