Buying your child their first bicycle is their first step towards freedom. However, choosing the right bicycle is much more than just finding the "prettiest color." A bicycle of the wrong size can make the learning process more difficult for your child, or even cause them to dislike cycling altogether.

At Uğur Bisiklet , with the experience gained from connecting thousands of children with the right bicycles since 1975, we explain how to determine the ideal size.

Age or Height? Which is More Important?

The most common mistake parents make is judging children solely based on age. However, every child grows at a different rate. Therefore, your main criteria should always be your child's height and inseam length.

Children's Bicycle Size Chart

The following table is based on general standards. You can find the most suitable wheel size (inches) by measuring your child's height:

Rim Size (Inch) Height Range (cm) Approximate Age Range
12 inch wheels 85 - 100 cm 2-4 Years
16-inch wheels 100 - 115 cm 4-6 Years
20 inch wheels 115 - 130 cm 6-8 Years
24-inch wheels 130 - 150 cm 8-12 Years
26-inch wheels 150 cm and above 12+ Years

How do you test if the size is correct?

If you have the chance to try out the bike in our shop, please pay attention to these three rules:

  1. Feet Must Touch the Ground: When a child is in the saddle, their toes (or the soles of their feet if they are a beginner) should be able to comfortably touch the ground.

  2. Handlebar Control: When turning the handlebars fully to the right and left, make sure your arms aren't strained too much.

  3. Frame Height: When standing in the middle of the bike, there should be a gap between the frame and your legs.

Don't fall for the "You'll ride it next year too" trap!

Many families choose to buy a bike one size larger because their child grows quickly. This is a big mistake from a safety perspective. * A larger bike is difficult to control.

  • He may have difficulty reaching the brake levers.

  • Maintaining balance becomes more difficult, and the risk of falling increases.

Uğur Bicycle Note: For your child's safety, always choose a bicycle that is "exactly" their size.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I pay attention to when buying a bike?

When buying a bike, you should consider your intended use, frame size, gear system and suspension type . City bikes should be preferred for urban use, road bikes for long distances and MTB (mountain bikes) for difficult terrain.

How to choose the right frame size?

The frame size depends on your leg length and height. The following method is usually used:

For MTB: Multiply your inseam length by 0.21.

For road cycling: Multiply your instep length by 0.665.

For city/touring bike: Multiply your instep length by 0.66.

Which bike gear system is better?

Shimano and SRAM are the most popular gear systems. Shimano Deore and SLX are ideal for mid-level MTB. SRAM GX or Shimano Ultegra are recommended for road bikes. For professional use with a higher budget , Shimano XTR or SRAM XX1 can be preferred.

What should be the bicycle tire pressure?

Tire pressure varies depending on the type of bike:

  • Road bike: 80-130 PSI
  • City bike: 50-70 PSI
  • MTB: 30-50 PSI (Depends on terrain)

Low pressure provides better handling but requires more effort. High pressure provides faster driving with less friction but reduces comfort.

Should disc brakes or V-brakes be preferred?

Disc brakes provide more powerful braking, especially in rainy weather.

V-brakes are lighter and easier to maintain. They are sufficient for city use.

How often should a bike chain be cleaned?

It is recommended that you clean and lubricate your chain every 200-300 km . If you have used it in muddy or rainy weather, you should do maintenance more frequently.

What type of tire should I use on my bike?

Slick tyres: Ideal for road bikes and urban use.

Treaded tires: Suitable for MTB and off-road conditions.

Hybrid tires: Can be used both in the city and in light off-road conditions.

Which is better, a carbon frame or an aluminum frame?

Aluminum frame : Durable, budget-friendly, and common on entry-level bikes.

Carbon frame : It is preferred in professional road and MTB bikes because it is lighter and vibration absorbing.

What equipment is needed when cycling?

Helmet (Mandatory for safety!)

Gloves (For better grip and comfort)

Glasses (For protection from sun and dust)

Lights and reflectors (Increases visibility during night driving)

Locking system (Keeps your bike safe)
